Miche: Late Nights, the Reflective Atmosphere of a NZ Winter, and a Dreamlike State of Reverie

Miche’s Reverie EP was shaped by quiet nights and grey skies. The kind of winter mood that seeps into everything you make. Led by the single Broken Rules, the EP is a reflective, late-night take on drum & bass that’s equal parts deep, moody and melodic. We caught up with Miche to talk about his journey into production, how Christchurch has shaped his sound, and the process of releasing Reverie alongside Ranger Records.

Get To Know Miche

Q: Miche, welcome to Ranger Records! How does it feel to be dropping your debut EP on the label?

A: Thanks! It feels really good, from the coming together of the tracks to the support and ease throughout the release from Ranger - it has been a great experience.

Q: Let’s start at the beginning — can you share a little about your journey into drum & bass and what drew you to producing?

A: I was a bit of a late bloomer when it comes to drum & bass, my background stems pretty strongly from rap and it was only really once I was studying at university that I really became engrossed within the drum & bass scene. My first 5 years or so of producing was spent idolizing internet trap/rap producers and selling beats/instrumentals online for rappers. I know - radically different to drum & bass, let alone the deeper, liquid stuff like the Reverie EP...

Q: Do you see yourself as an “emerging” artist, or does it feel more like you’ve been quietly honing your craft and now the timing’s right to step into the spotlight?

A: The latter for sure. With my debut release in 2023, that was the first time I'd even really told friends and family that I was taking production more seriously than a casual hobby. As a high school PE teacher, I have even altered my work hours this year to really put the time and effort into my craft.

Q: What’s life like in Christchurch’s music scene right now? How has the city shaped your sound?

A: As someone who moved to Christchurch as an adult, I love this city. It feels like it's always growing, improving, trying new things, and you get that same sense with the music coming out of here. If you want to go to some top tier shows/festivals, that's an option here, if you want to find a smaller, more niche crowd, that's an option too. I probably owe a ton of my inspiration/growth as a producer to this city.

About the Release

Q: Broken Rules is the lead single from your upcoming EP. What’s the story behind this track?

A: I think Broken Rules was the culmination of a month or so of some pretty late nights here in NZ's winter. I lean pretty heavily into my surroundings for inspiration when producing and those overcast days and wet nights felt like they almost worked alongside me for Broken Rules (and the whole Reverie EP). Broken Rules came together pretty quickly and naturally I wanted that vibe to continue, and the remaining 3 tracks on the EP came together pretty quickly after.

Q: Did Broken Rules set the direction for the rest of the EP, or did it come later in the process?

A: 100%. It was the first track I completed and the others on the EP weren't even ideas yet.

Q: Following Broken Rules, we’ve got the full Reverie EP. What can listeners expect from the rest of the project?

A: While producing the EP, I felt like I wanted to have every track be somewhat within the same scope but doing something a little different. The title track Reverie, for example, was made specifically with the idea in mind that I wanted it to be similar but more uplifting, not so deep and moody.

Q: Reverie translates to a dreamlike state. Why did you choose this title for the EP?

The whole EP, production wise, felt like one big flow/dreamlike state. Every track started and finished before even working on the next, and 90% of the time I spent working on each track was probably later than 8pm...

Q: Which track on the EP feels most personal to you, and why?

A: It probably has to be Broken Rules, just because of how well it set the standard for the other 3.

Q: The Reverie EP is also getting a vinyl release — Is vinyl something you collect yourself, or was this more about giving fans a physical piece of the music?

A: Vinyl is not something I collect myself, but I can appreciate the exclusive and 'physical-ness' of vinyl. In this modern, digital era I think it's really cool to be able to offer those who want to support me something physical like vinyl, something to actually own. A turntable is definitely on the shopping list now!

Onto the Quickfire Questions...

Q: Who are some of your biggest musical inspirations inside and outside of drum & bass?

A: 33 Below is a big one. From seeing him play smaller shows while I was at uni to becoming a mainstay name in dance music internationally is so sick, all while staying pretty true to himself in the social media/online space.

Q: If you could collaborate with any artist right now, who would it be?

A: I mention this in my 'Get to Know' video as well but Machinedrum. I listened to a podcast he was on recently and it was just a really insightful and relatable discussion. He's been around lots of different sub-genres and has been in the scene for a while now so I feel like I could learn so much from him as well.

Q: Dream venue or festival to play at?

A: Northern Bass for sure.

Q: Go-to set opener?

A: 33 Below - Keep You As A Memory

Q: With Broken Rules out September 5th and Reverie EP landing September 19th, what do you most want people to take away from these releases?

A: I guess just another angle/example of my production in a diversity sense. I feel like every month I'm working on something completely different to the month before, even my handful of releases so far as Miche are for the most part all pretty different.

Q: Finally — what’s next for Miche after Reverie?

A: You guys (Ranger Recs) have been a pleasure to work with and honestly I just want to keep the relationship strong, keep working on tracks that will have a spot on the label and grow alongside Ranger Recs. It's really refreshing to have such a new label be so personable and want to get the best out of the artist. Other than that - maybe some darker rollers are on the cards next.
